AIA Gets a New Chief Executive Officer

The American Institute of Architects recently through its board of directors announced the appointment of Mr. Robert Ivy as the new CEO. The announcement comes at a time when the institution is seeking to transform its operations across the country.

The American Institute of Architects was founded back in 1857 and has its headquarters in Washington DC. The premier institution offers government advocacy, education, public outreach and community development to support the architecture profession as well as promote its public image. The organization works hand in hand with other players in design and construction to help coordinate building around the country. AIA has a membership of over 90,000 architects who are all licensed to carry out architectural work.

Robert Ivy was born in Columbus, Mississippi. He went to Sewanee University where he obtained his bachelor’s degree in English and later proceeded to Tulane University for his Master’s degree in Architecture. Ivy before his appointment as the new CEO was serving as the Editorial Director for McGraw-Hill construction. As a professional Architect, has been known for advocating various social, political and economic issues of the society related to the building industry. He will take up his new position as from February 1, 2011.

The appointment of Robert Ivy has been welcomed by many architects and stakeholders who view him as the face of transformation. “ I believe Robert Ivy will bring about the kind of change AIA needs, we have been looking for someone who can blend architecture and other disciplines to give the institution a universal appearance,” said Clark Manus, AIA 2011 President. Mr. Ivy has also been a member of AIA board of directors since the 1990’s

“We welcome the decision by the American Institute of Architects to appoint Ivy as the new Chief Executive Officer, he takes up the new position at a time when we need change in terms of how the institution operates and I believe he is the right person for the job” commented George H. Miller, former AIA president. He added that there was a need to transform the institution regarding policy and operations.

American Institute of Architects has over 200 employees and 300 chapters spread across the country. Robert Ivy will be responsible for coordinating the activities of the Institution both at Washington and at the local levels. With a total annual budget of $56 million, the new CEO will have to ensure that most of the activities run smoothly.

Ivy has also been on the forefront in championing change within the institution. He argues that there is a need for architects to diversify into other sectors for the purpose of expanding their professional capability. Considering his new appointment, most people believe he will implement what he has been advocating for.
